With its reservoir levels receding and its grounds parched, California has officially fallen into drought, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger said June 4th, warning that the state might be forced to ration water to cities and regions if conservation efforts did not improve. The declaration comes after the driest California spring in 88 years, with runoff in river basins that feed most reservoirs at 41 percent of average levels. It stops short of a water emergency, which would probably include mandatory rationing.
Water conservation green tip: Water your lawn only when it needs it. Step on your grass. If it springs back, when you lift your foot, it doesn't need water. Thus, you can set your sprinklers for more days in between watering, which saves approximately 750-1,500 gallons per month. Better yet, especially in times of drought, water with a hose as opposed to sprinklers. Take it one step further by landscaping your lawn with native plants as opposed to exotic arrangements.
